Wood County Emergency Communications again participated in the annual ARRL Field Day held every year on the fourth full weekend of June. There were approximately thirty members who shuffled in and out of the Hendershot farm on Dallison Laurel Creek Road Saturday and Sunday to get their hands in on the quest to contact as many other Amateur Radio Operators as possible in the 24 hour event.
Used mainly as a practice exercise for disaster communications by WCEC, members spent much of their time building antennas, hooking up batteries and learning how to effectively communicate when there is no commercial power and under the most primitive of conditions. Referring to this scenario Ken Harris, director WCEC, said “If you’re going to make a mistake, now’s the time to fix it.” And fix it they did as strong storms lashed the area Saturday afternoon. Despite the interruptions contacts were made by many of the operators on hand.
