WOOD COUNTY EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS, P.O. BOX 3328, PARKERSBURG, WV 26103 http://www.wc8ec.com
DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.com website.
Not much news this week, but I've noticed that one of the Winlink 2000 Telpac NODEs hasn't been in service for several weeks, and the SYSOP of the station, Dick Wilt, K8TPH, hasn't checked into the DAREN Net since September 22, 2007. He may have shut his station down and went South for the Winter. If anyone knows what happened to Dick, you might let me know.
That's the only news I have for this week, if anyone has anything to report, send it to me so the DAREN News won't seem so short.
I think I'll go over some of the extra systems that are available to the users of the DAREN. Systems that you can connect to on a 24/7 basis and learn how to use. They may come in handy some time if you have some kind of activity and need one of them. There's an ARESData system that let's you keep track of victims, emergency responders, and equipment during a disaster. The ALIAS for the ARESData system is "FINDER". There's an X1-J4 Chat Room that allows several stations to connect and communicate with each other. It's ALIAS is "DAREN". There's the "K8KHW-10" Winlink 2000 (WL2K) Telpac NODE that allows you to send and receive E-Mail by accessing the Internet. There are two crossover systems, one allows you to crossover from the DAREN System on 145.69 MHz to the 145.09 MHz network. The ALIAS for it is "WOODXC". And the other crossover system allows you to crossover from the DAREN System to HF (High Frequency). The ALIAS for that one is the "K8KHW-7". All of these systems can be accessed from the Ritchie County NODE of RITCWV. Some of them can also be accessed from other NODEs. You just need to play with them and see what they can do. When you have time, connect and learn how to use them. If you have any questions about any of the systems, let me know and we'll try to answer them.
There were 66 check-ins to this week's State Wide DAREN Net. Last week I must have been half asleep when I wrote the News. I said that Bud McDowell, W8OO, had completed 750 check-ins, when it was Gene Roy, N8ER, who has been participating in the net since May 1, 1993, that had completed the 750 check- ins. When I looked at the original check-in list I see that W8OO was just below N8ER, I guess that's what happens when you have bifocal glasses. Sorry Gene. Ryan Woods, KD8ATF, who's been participating in the net since December 18, 2004, has completed 50 check-ins and will be receiving his certificate. There was one new station that checked into the net this week and that was David Paskawych, KB8UGD, from Marietta, Ohio. I welcome David to the DAREN system and hope that he participates in the net as often as he can. I'm caught up with the certificates that were supposed to be printed up and sent out a couple of months ago. If you've been expecting a certificate and haven't received it by the time you read this news, drop me a message on PKBGWV, or at my E-Mail, and I'll get it out to you.
