DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 Mhz. Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. DAREN Net Announcements, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'.
The news is a little late getting out this week. I got up very
early this morning to go to Elkins and teach a Packet Class. I had
a great time and there was 9 Amateurs in the class. Those taking
the class were: Richard Herron, KB8HTK; Jim Woodford, KC8MLK; Jason
Hatfield, KD8FDD; Brian Hatfield, KD8FOH; Roman Pineda, KD8FVV; Arnetta
Hatfield, KD8GKQ; Don Williams, N8NUS; Ken Butler WA8TOX; and Frank
Hughes, WD8DEP. A couple of those who took the class are regulars
on the State Wide DAREN Net. I hope to see the rest of them get
the equipment needed and start participating in the system. I want
to thank Shane Harper, KD8BMX, for setting up the class and inviting me
to teach it.
While I was the Packet Class I got a telephone call from Ken Riffle,
KB8QPW, telling me that a very good friend of mine had passed away.
Don Hale, N8EVP, passed away on Friday. Don had Cancer and has
been fighting it for about a year and half. Don was a regular on
the State Wide DAREN Net. He started checking into the net on
January 8, 2000, and his last check-in was April 28th of this year.
Don had checked into the net 154 times before he became too sick to
participate any more. Don was also a member of Army MARS with the
callsign of AAT3BN. I will miss Don, he was a very good friend.
I gave him his first Amateur Radio exam many, many, many years ago, long
before there was a VE program. His first callsign was WD8DGD,
which he said stood for "Darn Good Detective". At the time Don was
a Detective on the Parkersburg Police Department.
While I was at the conference at Camp Dawson this past Sunday, Monday,
and Tuesday, I talked to Dirk Burnside, WD8PAD. Dirk told me the
Department of High Ways in Wirt County was having a problem with their
radio system. They haven't been able to isolate the problem, but
he wanted me to work with their technician to make sure the problem
wasn't being caused by our Amateur Radio equipment which is located at
the same site. To isolate the problem at the site, the Remote
Receiver for the 147.255 MHz repeater, and the Wirt County DAREN
NODE/PBBS of WIRTWV/ELIZWV were removed for awhile.
There were 59 check-ins again to this week's State Wide DAREN Net.
Delmas Hartley, AB8EA, who's been participating in the net since January
14, 1995, has completed 300 check-ins and will be receiving his
certificate. Peggy Hartley, KB8SEJ, needs only one more check-in
to make 300.
