DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 Mhz. Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. DAREN Net Announcements, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'.
The news has been slim these past few weeks, but the weather is supposed to be warming up, maybe there will be some outside activities, and then I'll have something to write about. It's been suggested about putting the DAREN News out on a monthly basis, but I would like to keep putting it out weekly, that way I can keep it to just one page. Some times I have enough information that I have to let it run from one week to the next. So if you have anything you would like to pass on, just let me know.
For the last few weeks I've been unable to connect to the Hancock County NODE/PBBS of HANCWV/WEIRWV. A couple of weeks ago I talked to Roy Humes, N8RH, and he said that Chuck Bennett, WD8DNC, who normally takes care of the station, has been having health problems and is unable to investigate why the station is off the air, I guess we will have to find someone else to look at the station.
I just got my SERA (Southeastern Repeater Association) magazine and have been reading through it. It's a good little magazine and does have some good articles. For those who don't know about SERA, it's the repeater frequency coordinating organization that helps keep the voice repeaters in the states of Kentucky, Georgia, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia coordinated with the FCC. If you are a trustee of a repeater in any of those states, and not a member of SERA, you might think about joining. As a member you get the benefits of having the protection from other repeaters being installed and causing interference to your repeater. You also get two copies of the magazine which is put out four times a year. The cost for keeping all of your repeaters coordinated is only 20 dollars a year. For more information, go to: www.sera.org.
There were 74 check-ins to this week's State Wide DAREN Net. The Barbour County Area Radio Club, WV8BC, who's been participating in the net since January 28, 2006 has completed 50 check-ins, and will be receiving their certificate. Jerry Nelson, KC8HUP, needs only more check-in to make 400. There were two new participates to the net this week and they were Opie Nutter, KC8ZBQ, in Parkersburg, and Steve Ritchie, KB8CCQ, in Marietta, OH. I want to welcome these stations to the DAREN system, and hope they participate as often as they can.
